ALKALINE

Has a pH greater than 7; pH modifier in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wetland classification system; in common usage, a pH of water greater than 7.4.

ALL-AGED or UNEVEN-AGED MANAGEMENT

The practice of managing a forest by periodically selecting and harvesting individual trees or groups of trees from the stand while preserving its natural appearance. Most common in hardwood forests.

ALLOMETRIC BIOMASS EQUATIONS

Regression equations calculating biomass based on measured parameters of a tree (or shrub), for example, quantifying the relationship between above-ground tree biomass and the diameter at breast height and tree height of a specific tree species

ALLUVIAL

Relating to mud and/or sand deposited by flowing water. Alluvial deposits may occur after a heavy rain storm.

ALLUVIAL AQUIFER

A water-bearing deposit of unconsolidated material (sand and gravel) left behind by a river or other flowing water.

ALLUVIAL FAN

Fan-shaped deposit of generally course material created where a stream flows out onto a gentle plain.

ALLUVIAL STREAM

1) S-shaped channel pattern that is free to meander in a valley. 2) bed materials of silt, clay, sand and gravel are conveyed from upstream.

ALLUVIUM

General term for sediments of gravel, sand, silt, clay, or other particulate rock material deposited by flowing water, usually in the beds of rivers and streams, on a flood plain, on a delta, or at the base of a mountain.
